Printmaking

Sarah Znidarsich was born and raised in Wisconsin and now lives in Baraboo with her husband and two young sons. She enjoys working in her home studio alongside her husband, Tim. Her background is in intaglio printmaking, particularly aquatint techniques. Most of her early work depicts delicate scenes of nature and travel, carefully constructed with a rich monotone value scale. More recently, Sarah has expanded into colorful and playful imagery created with letterpress and multi-plate printmaking techniques.

“My monotone aquatint prints are based on my travel and nature photography. Intaglio printmaking demands my time and full attention. I spend time with the image, learning every detail of it, carving it into the metal as it was carved into my memory. The grainy tonal range of aquatint portrays a sense of nostalgia, as the images appear to be weathered and aged. As I etch layers of value into the metal, I live in the memories of my experiences. The physicality of printmaking ensures that every decision is intentional, and that I must be invested in each image. Therefore, I use this art form to process through my life experiences, and can unlock the emotions of a particular time or place by creating each print.

Motherhood has transformed my life. Along with chaos and exhaustion has come joy and laughter. Some of my recent prints represent my experiences of raising two boys by using layered imagery, bold colors, and non-traditional materials, such as LEGO. I have even been able to work side-by-side with my children while creating prints. Both my past and present, my pains and joys, are part of my artistic process. I hope to connect with others by creating images that embrace all facets of life.”
