Christopher Sweet is a contemporary Native American artist who was born and raised in Wisconsin. He is an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and is also White Earth Ojibwe through his father. Christopher has been artistic throughout his life and is largely self-taught. His motivation to learn drives him to create by experimenting with various techniques, styles, and materials.
In 2016, Christopher was presented with the opportunity for a solo exhibition, which marked the beginning of his pursuit of art as a career. Since then, he has received awards at juried art shows and has had his work featured in printed materials, corporate spaces, schools, medical facilities, and private collections. His artwork has been exhibited across Wisconsin and the Midwest, including notable venues such as the Pablo Center at the Confluence in Eau Claire, the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, and All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis, MN.
In 2021, Christopher opened Blue Bear Studio, which serves as his creative space and gallery. The studio’s name, Blue Bear, is the English translation of his Ho-Chunk name, Huuc Coo Ga.
Christopher describes his artistic process as creating through the lens of his own experiences, with his paintings encapsulating his thoughts, feelings, and values. He is deeply influenced by traditional indigenous ways of life, both past and present, drawing inspiration from key cultural aspects such as storytelling, song, dance, regalia, community, and spiritual connectedness.
As a true introvert, art has become a meaningful form of self-expression, with each artwork serving as an extension of himself. A significant part of his creative process is setting intentions of healing and unity, with the hope that these intentions become an intrinsic part of his creations as he puts paint to canvas.
