Carole continues to work representationally with watercolor, colored pencil, wax crayon, and acrylic gouache. She enjoys the back-and-forth technique of alternately painting and drawing to create layers that gradually develop complex color and shifts of value. Inspired by Baroque and Renaissance portraiture, she asks her chosen sitters to bring an object of personal significance to the studio and adopt a pose, holding the item and flashing a symbolic gesture while she takes a reference photo. Carole also indulges in her passion for fiber art, especially handwoven rag rugs. You can expect to encounter both functional and decorative pieces in a variety of materials and techniques.
Carole grew up with educator parents and no television, so since childhood she’s been making things in 2D and 3D. She graduated from Bates College (ME) with a BA in Fine Art and earned her MA and MFA from the University at Albany (NY).
After graduate school, Carole lived in Manhattan, New York City for 17 years where she was assistant coordinator for the State University system’s Studio Semester in New York program.
She’s long retired from her Senior Lecturer position in the Art area at the University of Wisconsin – Platteville as well as from being Program Director with Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts, and is now enjoying life as a full-time artist, workshop leader, and gallerist – Carole and her partner, painter Richard Moninski, own and operate Green Lantern Studios, a gallery of fine art and handicrafts in downtown Mineral Point. She’s also a musician – check out her bands, the classic country group “Stay Tuned” and the jazzy ensemble “Driftless Standard Time”.
